Best answer

Given system: A system that monitors patients in a hospital intensive care unit

Reliability metric – Availability

This system needs to be continuously available as patients may be admitted or discharged at any time.

Suggested value: Suggested value is, the system should be unavailable for less than 20 minutes per month.

Given system: Word processor

Reliability metric: Rate of occurrence of failure

The system must be reliable. The rate of occurrence of errors must be low.

Suggested value: Suggested value is failures resulting in loss of data should not occur more than once per 1200 hours of usage.

Given system: An automated vending machine controller

Reliability metric: Probability of failure on demand.

The probability of failure of this system must be low so that it performs well.

Suggested value: Suggested value is the ratio of failure acceptability to demands is 1: 5000.

Given system: A system to control braking in a car.

Reliability metric: Probability of failure on demand.

The system must perform well with less number or almost zero failures because the failure may cause damage in a large extent.

Suggested value: Suggested value is the software should never fail within the predicted lifetime of the system.

Given system: A system is to control a refrigeration unit.

Reliability metric: Availability.

The refrigeration unit must be controlled all the time.

Suggested value: Suggested value is 20 minutes per month.

Given system: A management report generator

Reliability metric: Rate of occurrence of failure

Reports must be accurate. So they must generate least errors and the system is supposted to work without failures.

Suggested value: Suggested value is 1 fault/ 100 hours of use. It is not a critical system. Faults are unlike to cause severe disruption.
