HOL Blocking:

• HOL Blocking means Head of the Line Blocking.

• It generally occurs at input ports.

• The phenomenon of HOL Blocking occurs when two packets are destined to the same position in the output queue.

• When the switching fabric chooses a packet, the other packet should wait. If the packet which is in waiting state has another packet behind it then that packet also must remain in waiting state.

• The packet at the head of the line blocks the second packet. Therefore, the second packet experiences HOL blocking.

The following figure describes the HOL Blocking:

The light color packet is headed by the dark colored packet. Therefore, it experience HOL Blocking.
