• Packets that are being transmitted contain different kinds of information, depending on the type of the information the packets are carrying packets are classified in classes of high priority and low priority.
• For example there are two kinds of packets one packet contains a video message and the second contains a text message, the video message is given high priority than the simple text message.
• Similarly packets carrying control information about the network are given high priority than the data packets.
• For example, multimedia applications use multimedia data. Also multimedia data must be reached the destination with shorter delays. Thus, by giving high priority to the multimedia data packets, those packets can reach destination quickly.
