A process is an instance of a program in execution. A program in execution typically contains the program code and its activity. A process may initiate multiple threads to allow multiple instructions to run concurrently.

Process Characteristics

  • Resource Ownership: The Operating System prevents unwanted interference between processes and the resources allocated to them.
  • Scheduling and Execution: Every process has an execution state and a dispatching priority

For more information about processes and threads, refer to some of the Books on Operating Systems.
