The RTP (Real-Time Transport Protocol) provides end-to-end network transport function for application transmitting real time data such as simulation data or transmitting the audio/video or multicast and unicast network services.

Identification of different RTP streams in different sessions by receiver:

• RTP streams in different sessions are identified using their different multicast addresses.

• RTP packets provides one-to-many and many-to-many multicast trees.

Thus, different RTP streams in different sessions are identified by receiver.

Identification of different RTP streams in the same session by receiver:

• Each RTP stream that a sender is transmitting, the sender also creates and transmits source description packet in SSRC (Synchronization source identifier) field.

• SSRC is a number, that the source assigns randomly when the new stream is started.

Thus, using this number the RTP streams can be identified.

The RTP packets can be distinguished from RTCP packets by using their port numbers.
