Data disposal is the process of destroying data stored electronically on storage media such as hard disk drives, tapes in a manner that renders the data unreadable and irretrievable.

Data disposal is more than just deleting the data. Additional steps must be taken to overwrite the now available memory blocks previously occupied by the deleted data with random data until the deleted data is irretrievable.
