There are 3 main basic control lines found in the control bus for any microprocessor, responsible for handling the read and write operations from the CPU to other devices within the computer.

These are:

  1. Read line: A single line that when active, indicates that data is being read by the CPU.
  2. Write line: A single line that when active indicates that the device is being written into by the CPU.
  3. Byte enable: A group of lines that indicate the size of data in bytes.
