A data dictionary can be defined as a  DBMS component that stores the definition of data characteristics and relationships, such data is revered to as meta data. A data dictionary is very vital and helps the admin with ease of use. Some key role of the data dictionary within the DBMS include;

1. Provides description of data elements stored in the data base, such as name, data type, an display format.

2. Stores details on the Tables of database

3. Every change in the database using the Data Definition Language is automatically captured by the data dictionary.
