Novus Actus Interveniens translates to a new act intervening. The defence of Novus Actus Interveniens  in law of tort is a plea that after the conduct of a defendant, a new act which was independent or external and not generated by the defendant intervened, and caused injury to the plaintiff hereby has relieved the defendant of liability.

A novus actus interveniens is an act that comes in between the initial act and the results and disconnects the initial act from the injury that occurred, herby becoming the immediate and direct cause of the harm that occurred thereby relieving the initial defendant from liability. A plea of this defence is a way of saying that the damage is not reasonably foreseeable and it can be pleaded in both civil and criminal law.
