This is a legal principle in common law that the court uses to prevent a person from asserting a right that contradicts what they said initially/previously agreed to, or something that had been legally established as true.

Estoppel can be argued in a situation whereby one party has relied on a promise or representation made by another party and suffered a detriment as a result.
