Database Management System (DBMS) is a software program used to create, update, manage, and store data. The database is the arranged collection of interrelated data used to effectively insert, retrieve, or delete data.

The term "data" can be stated as facts, records, interpretations, truthful information, or predefined values and figures that need to be processed and stored in a specific manner. The database is a computer-based storage system that is used to store, manage and retrieve data.

The primary function is to manage the huge data efficiently. For example, the university database stores and manages all the data about their courses, admin, students, and staff members. One can easily access, store, update or delete any information about any entity using a database.

The database management system offers an interface to execute various functions like creating a database, data storage into a database, data modifications, security, and many other things. Various DBMS used in multiple applications are MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQLite, IBM DB2, MS Access, Ingres, and many more.

These database management systems act as an interface between the database and the application programs so that the end-users can access or modify data easily.
