Difference between the Symmetric Multiprocessor (SMP) and the Asymmetric Multiprocessor (AMP)
|Symmetric Multiprocessor (SMP)||Asymmetric Multiprocessor (AMP)|
|All processors are designed the same and handle the same type of tasks.||Each processor specialized to a specific task.|
|Used when more resources are available.||Used when fewer resources are available.|
|Used in general purpose computers because things need to be done the same way.||Used in embedded systems.|
- For time critical tasks, AMP is recommended
- If throughput is required SMP is recommended.
