A protocol is set of rules that are to be followed to perform an activity or task. In network terminology, a protocol is a set of rules that are followed to control the exchange of data between two communicating devices.

Standards for protocols are important because they specify the manner and order of sending and receiving data between the communicating devices.

Standards can also be said to form fundamental building blocks for product service worldwide. extending this to networking, standards set a guideline that can be universally followed in creating of networks, so these networks can inter operate.
