Why does the maximum packet lifetime, have to be large enough to ensure that not only the packet but also its acknowledgements have vanished?

The maximum Packet lifetime T has to be large enough to ensure both packets and acknowledgment have vanished, so as to avoid a situation were only the packets have been received but not the acknowledgements, as this could result in duplicate packets.
