Advantages of a Magnetic Tape
1. It is inexpensive and relatively stable
2. It has the ability to store large volume of information
3. It is relatively reliable because of several self checking features e.g. parity bits
4. It is ideal for backup storage and it has the ability to be reused over and over again.
Disadvantage of a Magnetic Tape
It is relatively slow due to its sequential mode of accessing information. To locate the tenth record on the tape it has to go through the first nine records before reaching it.
