There are two broad categories of communication channels namely:

1. Guided Channels: These provide a physical conduit between devices. Example include Coaxial, Ethernet and Fiber Optic cables.

2. Unguided Channels: These do not use physical conduits rather signals are transmitted freely through the air. Examples include Bluetooth, WiFi and Cellular/Mobile phone communication networks.
