Context Free Grammar

A context-free grammar is a formal grammar that is used in the generation of all possible patterns of strings in any given formal language.

They contain production rules that enable the generation of strings within the language, these rules can be applied regardless of context.  A context-free grammar is especially useful to computers, it is used in compilers for parsing.
