A semaphore can be described as a variable, or an integer used mainly for the controlling of access to a shared resources by multiple threads. It is implemented in parallel systems, and always initialized to the total number of resources available on the system. There are two methods used in the modification of a semaphore value, these are the Wait and Signal methods.

The two types of semaphore we have are:

  • Counting semaphore
  • Binary semaphore
